California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Tuesday that the trial against Meta, which began in Oakland, was not about damages but about civil penalties, restitution and distortion. The attorneys general of 29 states, led by those from California, Colorado, New Jersey and Kentucky, accuse Meta of designing Facebook and Instagram to encourage addictive behavior in children. The states’ lawyers are also requesting the deletion of personal data for children under 13 and the removal of certain design features like infinite scroll and autoplay.
