Apple announced Tuesday that alternative, third-party app stores in the European Union will be charged a 5% commission on in-app purchases. Apps using Apple’s payment system through the App Store will pay 26%, those using their own payment processing will pay 20%, and those linking out to websites will pay 15%. These new fee tiers take effect on October 1. This overhaul comes as part of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to open its App Store to third-party developers.
