Syria has agreed to hand over nuclear materials (uranium yellowcake and other residues) stored at Site 99, near the Al-Kibar reactor destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in 2007. The agreement, finalized around mid-July 2026 with heavy US involvement, calls for an IAEA visit on August 11, 2026, with complete material removal expected by year-end. Israel had threatened to strike the site while the United States presented this cooperation as essential to Syria’s reintegration into the international community. Samples taken between 2024 and 2025 confirmed the presence of anthropogenic uranium particles, proving the nuclear nature of activities conducted at this secret site of the former regime.
