Turkey steps in to broker Hormuz reopening and US-Iran ceasefire talks

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to keep the US-Iran ceasefire alive and restore commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The strait carries roughly 20% of the world’s crude oil exports and has faced severe restrictions since the conflict began, which the International Energy Agency has described as the most significant disruptions in oil market history. Brent crude has exceeded $100 per barrel during peak stress periods. Ankara wants a diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran before any technical work on Hormuz begins and explicitly opposes military proposals. Two previous ceasefire attempts have already failed, but Fidan describes his current outlook as cautiously optimistic, with negotiations facilitated by Pakistan and Oman.
