ByteDance signs AI copyright MOU with Motion Picture Association in historic first deal

ByteDance signed a memorandum of understanding with the Motion Picture Association on August 17, marking the first time Hollywood has entered a formal copyright agreement with an AI company. This MOU covers ByteDance’s generative AI tools including Seedance, Seedream, and Dreamina, as well as platforms TikTok and CapCut, with guardrails against unauthorized use of copyrighted material. In February 2026, the MPA had sent ByteDance a cease-and-desist letter following the launch of Seedance 2.0, criticizing the ease with which users could generate content featuring characters, scenes, and actor likenesses owned by member studios. Both parties, represented by Charles Rivkin for the MPA and John Rogovin for ByteDance, are positioning this deal as a model for how AI developers and creative industries can coexist.
