Solana is preparing for one of the biggest changes to its consensus architecture. The upcoming Alpenglow upgrade targets a dramatic reduction in transaction finality, from approximately 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. Initially expected in September, this upgrade is set to be deployed via Agave 4.3, with an official launch targeted for Q3 2026. Under Solana’s current TowerBFT consensus mechanism, achieving cryptographic finality takes roughly 12.8 seconds, while Alpenglow aims to compress that process to 150 milliseconds. According to co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, finality is truly critical only during high-value commercial transactions.
