Several financial firms, including prediction platform Kalshi, CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange, are competing to create a futures market for AI compute, the chips and electricity powering the artificial intelligence revolution. Hourly compute prices can fluctuate by as much as 137% over the course of a year, creating an urgent need for hedging tools among companies that depend on these resources. According to Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour, the compute market could be worth $10 trillion by 2030, with associated futures contracts potentially reaching $100 to $150 trillion. However, current markets remain tiny: Kalshi recorded only $4.4 million in notional volume compared to over $70 billion traded daily in oil markets. Stanford University finance professor Darrell Duffie believes traditional players like CME and Intercontinental are better positioned than Kalshi to dominate this emerging market.
