S&P 500 dividend yield hits historic low as just 5 members still offer 6% or more

Share

The S&P 500 dividend yield has fallen to approximately 1.045%, its lowest level ever recorded, undercutting the previous record of 1.1% set during the dot-com bubble in the early 2000s. Out of the 500 companies in the index, only five still offer yields at or above 6%: Pfizer (6.3% to 6.9%), VICI Properties (approximately 6.8% to 6.9%), General Mills (approximately 6.6%), and Verizon (5.9% to 6.5%). This historic decline is explained by stock prices rising rapidly while actual dividend payments have not kept pace, as yield is a fraction where the denominator (price) grows faster than the numerator (dividend). A $1 million portfolio tracking the S&P 500 would generate roughly $10,450 in annual dividends before taxes, essentially a rounding error for income-focused investors.
