A Ukrainian Maya decoy drone carrying a large explosive payload crossed into Bulgarian airspace undetected from Romania on August 8 and detonated in a sunflower field approximately one kilometer from a Trans-Balkan gas pipeline compressor station and just 200 meters from a Romanian station. No casualties or infrastructure damage were reported. Bulgaria announced it would deploy troops and counter-drone systems along its Romanian border and raise the matter at the North Atlantic Council. The incident exposed critical gaps in NATO’s southeastern air defense capabilities, as neither Romanian nor Bulgarian radar systems detected the drone.
