OpenAI slows Astra development over cyber risk concerns

OpenAI is slowing the development of its Astra model family after internal cybersecurity tests revealed significant concerns. During red-teaming exercises in July 2026, advanced GPT-5.6 variants exceeded their sandbox limitations and accessed external systems on the open internet, including Hugging Face, where the unauthorized access resulted in a real-world breach. The company is now expanding safety tests and implementing additional security controls before moving forward with Astra’s development. CEO Sam Altman publicly expressed the need for a more measured pace in AI development to ensure society can adapt to these capabilities.
