Diego Forlán, the 2010 World Cup Golden Boot winner, has been appointed interim head coach of Uruguay’s senior national team on July 13, 2026. He succeeds Marcelo Bielsa, who resigned after Uruguay’s group stage exit from the 2026 World Cup. The 47-year-old Forlán will also manage the Under-20 side, a dual mandate aimed at both immediate damage control and long-term development. His interim contract runs until March 2027, coinciding with AUF elections that will determine the next permanent coach. Over his international career, Forlán earned 112 caps and scored 36 goals for La Celeste.
