Sixteen developers used artificial intelligence models to analyze 390 projects in the Bitcoin ecosystem, identifying 4,962 potential vulnerabilities, including 85 classified as critical and 635 of high severity. The audit, completed in approximately thirty hours at a cost of about $10,000 per day in computing power, revealed roughly one critical bug per person per hour. However, the unprecedented volume of alerts overwhelmed the maintainers, who are often volunteers, creating what researchers described as chaos and prompting apologies from the team. This audit comes amid heightened tensions, as thefts targeting Coldcard wallets have reached $114 million since July 30, exploiting a firmware vulnerability dormant since 2021. Researchers acknowledge that the main challenge now lies in sorting, validating, and routing vulnerabilities to the appropriate developers.
