Google promoted Koray Kavukcuoglu to Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind on August 5, placing him in charge of Gemini model development and core AI research teams reporting directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. The 13-year DeepMind veteran, who helped develop the DQN reinforcement learning algorithm and the WaveNet generative audio model, also retains his position as Chief AI Architect. As part of the reshuffle, co-founder Demis Hassabis moved to a strategic role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist for Alphabet. Pichai has led Google since 2015 and Alphabet since 2019. The key risk is that moving Hassabis to an advisory position while handing operational control to his former deputy could generate internal tension and uncertainty in Alphabet’s AI roadmap.
