Cyberattacks hit water systems in seven US states, Iran suspected

Between July 28 and July 31, 2026, malicious actors targeted water and wastewater utilities across at least seven US states, causing operational disruptions. Minnesota bore the heaviest impact, with more than 30 municipal water systems affected. Some facilities were forced to abandon digital controls and revert to manual operations. The FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency issued a joint advisory noting the absence of ransom demands and exploring links to Iranian-backed hackers. Previous incidents had already targeted water facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas.
