Soccer-FIFA scraps World Cup sell-off plan after resistance from members

FIFA announced on Friday that it will not proceed with its plan to sell approximately a 20% stake in a new unit managing its events, including the World Cup, to raise up to $4.2 billion. The deal would have valued the entire business at $20 billion. The proposal, strongly opposed by UEFA which threatened a boycott, led to the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, Gianni Infantino’s senior adviser, who called it « a bad deal for football. » Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour said staff had been « deceived » by Infantino. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that Infantino was « the wrong man to lead the organisation. »
