Bank of Italy finds no consistent cost advantage for stablecoin remittances

The Bank of Italy conducted a study on cross-border stablecoin transfers, revealing total costs ranging from 0.3% to nearly 9% depending on the payment corridor. Transfers were settled in less than 20 minutes where instant payment systems were available, and in one to two business days otherwise. Using the World Bank’s global average of 6.65% as a benchmark, stablecoin transfers were cheaper in most corridors examined, but only cheaper than Wise in 3 of 7 comparable corridors. The stablecoin market has reached approximately $307 billion, up about 16% over the past year. The study concluded that investment in domestic instant payment infrastructure could improve the competitiveness of stablecoin-based cross-border payments.
