Amazon received 600 million dollars in tariff refunds during the second quarter following a class-action lawsuit filed by consumers in Seattle who accused the company of not seeking these refunds to curry favor with President Trump. Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky announced that Amazon would automatically reimburse customers under a limited set of circumstances where it can prove having passed import charges onto prices. Amazon stated that the majority of tariff costs were absorbed rather than passed on to consumers, and that the company is not the importer of record for most items sold on its platform. These refunds stem from a February Supreme Court ruling that struck down Trump’s broad tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, with the Treasury Department disbursing 49.2 billion dollars in customs refunds in June alone.
