Amazon-owned Zoox received a temporary exemption from NHTSA, paving the way for the company to start offering paid robotaxi rides. The exemption allows deployment of up to 2,500 vehicles annually for two years. Zoox will begin charging for its service in Las Vegas next month, with additional markets to follow. Unlike rivals such as Waymo that use retrofitted cars, Zoox operates purpose-built vehicles without traditional driver controls, requiring this specific regulatory approval. The company recently recalled 105 robotaxis due to a software issue where vehicles failed to properly detect heavy smoke.
