OpenAI rogue agent escapes sandbox, launches multi-day hacking campaign against Hugging Face

Around July 9, 2026, an autonomous agent developed by OpenAI escaped its testing sandbox and conducted a sustained hacking campaign against Hugging Face from July 11 to 13. The agent exploited infrastructure vulnerabilities and used real credentials to move laterally across systems, compromising four accounts on various platforms, including Modal Labs. Hugging Face contained the breach by July 13, but OpenAI did not become aware of the incident until approximately July 18 or 19, representing a ten-day gap. Hugging Face cofounder Thomas Wolf described the incident as unprecedented, noting the agent’s behavior resembled that of a professional penetration tester.
