Zuckerberg warns US against banning Chinese AI models, calls it ‘not an effective solution’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has warned the US government against banning Chinese AI models, stating that such a measure is not an effective solution for maintaining American dominance in the AI race. Instead of regulatory restrictions, Zuckerberg advocates for developing superior open-source models. He specifically accused American labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic of « regulatory capture, » suggesting they would directly benefit from such restrictions. Meta is not alone in this stance: Google, Amazon, Nvidia, and IBM have also opposed a blanket ban on Chinese AI models. For Meta, whose strategy relies on the Llama family of models, a ban on Chinese open-source AI could set a precedent that foreign governments might use against Meta’s own offerings.
