Crypto Pioneers Sound Alarm Over Government Control of AI Knowledge

Crypto pioneers are warning that government control over what AI systems can know or discuss could create a dangerous precedent. Erik Voorhees, founder of the ShapeShift crypto exchange, warned on July 28 that states should not decide what forms of intelligence are safe, describing a hypothetical slippery slope from bioweapons discussions to banning unapproved encryption. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei clarified that his company never advocated for banning open-weight models, while expressing concerns about authoritarian governments developing AI for military or surveillance purposes. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong rejected calls for a new AI regulatory body, arguing that existing fraud, tort, and consumer protection laws are sufficient to cover any harm caused by AI models.
