Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi offered to supply Turkey with 1 million barrels of oil per day, matching the physical capacity of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline. The 1973 crude oil pipeline agreement expires on July 27, 2026, and Turkey has already signaled it will not renew the deal under its current terms. The pipeline connects northern Iraq’s Kirkuk oil fields to Turkey’s Mediterranean port of Ceyhan with a design capacity of 1 to 1.6 million barrels per day. Turkey is seeking to strengthen its role as an energy transit hub between east and west, mirroring its position for Russian gas via TurkStream and Azerbaijani gas via TANAP. Any agreement expanding throughput would boost transit revenues for Turkish state entities and improve export economics for Iraqi producers.
