Bitcoin Mining Is Becoming More Eco-Friendly According to This Study

According to a study by the University of Cambridge, the Bitcoin mining industry now relies on 60% low-carbon energy sources, up from 52.4% previously. Its electricity consumption increased by about 38% between June 2024 and December 2025, rising from 138 to 190 terawatt-hours annually, while CO2 equivalent emissions only grew by 20%, from about 40 to 48 million tonnes. Hydroelectric power has overtaken natural gas as the sector’s primary energy source. Only 10% of surveyed miners currently dedicate part of their capacity to AI services, though 40% are considering this diversification.
