Martel Williams, 27, pleaded guilty in Hartford to conspiring to commit robbery under the Hobbs Act, a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The conspirators planned to force their way into the Connecticut home of a man they intended to threaten and compel to transfer his bitcoin to accounts they controlled. After staking out the house for two days and fearing they had been captured on security cameras, Williams and two associates left Connecticut without carrying out the robbery. A second crew of six men from Florida arrived on August 25, 2024, kidnapped the target’s parents during a violent carjacking and was subsequently arrested by Danbury police. Williams was arrested on July 17, 2026, and remains free pending sentencing; the federal case concerns the attempted robbery rather than the original bitcoin theft, which local reports valued between $230 million and $245 million.
