Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat, warned during a recent appearance that quantum computers could crack Bitcoin as early as 2028-2029. Approximately 30% to 35% of Bitcoin’s total supply, roughly 7 million BTC, is vulnerable because these dormant coins sit on old legacy addresses whose public keys have been exposed on the blockchain. Adam Back, creator of Hashcash, clarified that Bitcoin does not use encryption but digital signatures (ECDSA), and that seed phrases are protected by an enormous level of entropy that quantum computers cannot brute-force. Bitcoin developers have been working on post-quantum signature algorithms for years, but the owners of these 7 million coins, including roughly 1 million BTC attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto, will likely be unable to move their assets in time.
