Amazon’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary Zoox has received NHTSA approval to deploy up to 2,500 purpose-built robotaxis annually for two years. The vehicles, which have no steering wheel, no pedals, inward-facing seats, and a top speed of 75 mph, represent the first commercial exemption granted to a purpose-built robotaxi in the US. Paid rides are planned for Las Vegas, pending state and local approvals. Zoox must maintain US-based remote operators, publicly map operating areas, and report crashes continuously, with NHTSA retaining authority to revoke the exemption at any time.
