WikiHow has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of using more than 11,000 of its instructional articles to train its GPT models, including ChatGPT, without permission or payment. The lawsuit, filed on August 21, 2026, in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, is the 24th copyright case brought against OpenAI in the United States. The complaint alleges that at least 1,200 of these articles carry registered copyrights, which enables higher statutory damages. WikiHow seeks financial compensation as well as an injunction to force OpenAI to stop using its content in future training. The core economic argument is that ChatGPT now produces instructional content that directly competes with WikiHow’s articles, doing so faster and at a lower cost.
