The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has released a proposal to classify stablecoins as « cash equivalents, » which would treat them as highly liquid and low-risk assets. This change follows a 2025 consultation in which members raised concerns about the uncertainty of accounting treatment for stablecoins on balance sheets. Currently, global banking regulations (Basel III) impose a 1250% risk weight on stablecoins, classifying them alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum with stringent capitalization requirements. Analysts believe the FASB’s decision could pressure Basel III to relax its strict capital rules on crypto assets. Annual stablecoin transfer volume reached a record $10.9 trillion last year and has already hit $10.59 trillion this year.
