Weight loss drug Wegovy made Novo Nordisk Europe’s most valuable company. Finding its next blockbuster drug is proving difficult

Novo Nordisk, the Danish drugmaker that overtook LVMH to become Europe’s most valuable company in 2023 thanks to its Ozempic and Wegovy weight-loss drugs, is facing a difficult period. Its U.S. rival Eli Lilly has eaten into its market share, with its share price nearly doubling since 2024 while Novo Nordisk’s has fallen 70%. The company announced 9,000 job cuts in September 2025 to reduce costs by $1.2 billion, and a failed phase three trial for its cardiovascular drug ziltivekimab sent its share price down 10%. Despite these setbacks, Novo Nordisk will soon launch its Wegovy pill in Germany and is betting on 80% annual volume growth in the global weight-loss drug market.
