Walmart has settled a U.S. government lawsuit accusing the retail giant of contributing to the opioid epidemic by improperly dispensing prescriptions from its pharmacies. The Justice Department and Walmart confirmed the settlement on Friday without disclosing the terms. The government had accused the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company of violating the federal Controlled Substances Act since 2013. More than 905,000 people died from opioid overdoses in the U.S. between 1999 and 2025 according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2022, Walmart had already agreed to pay $3.1 billion to settle thousands of lawsuits brought by state and local governments.
