The US Treasury Department, through OFAC, has indefinitely suspended five general licenses that allowed Americans to participate in sports, academic, and educational exchanges with Iran. The move, announced on August 24, eliminates some of the last remaining carve-outs for non-commercial engagement between the two countries. The suspended licenses include General License F for sports exchanges and General License G for academic and educational services, along with three additional regulatory sections covering personal remittances. A wind-down period until September 8 has been granted via General License BB to complete ongoing activities. The suspensions follow broader sanctions tightening, including the revocation of General License X in July 2026 and digital asset sanctions targeting Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued on August 7, 2026.
