US targets airlines, digital assets linked to Iran as Treasury ramps up sanctions pressure

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched « Operation Economic Outcast » on August 24, a broad sanctions initiative targeting five sectors linked to the Iranian regime: digital assets, aviation, shipping, technology, and gold. The goal is to cut off funding for Iran’s military apparatus, specifically the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The US Treasury has already seized approximately $1 billion in Iranian-linked digital assets, highlighting the seriousness with which Washington views cryptocurrency as a sanctions-evasion tool. Iranian carriers such as Mahan Air and IranAir are targeted, along with companies that facilitate their operations, including fuel suppliers and leasing firms. The Office of Foreign Assets Control now has expanded authority to pursue any entity, anywhere in the world, that supports targeted activities.
