US military operations erode Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz

The United States has conducted a sustained military campaign against Iran starting in summer 2026, including airstrikes on more than 80 Iranian military sites in July, naval escort operations for commercial vessels, and a demining mission completed in August. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly a fifth of global oil supply, dropped from over 100 vessels per day to just a handful during Iranian interdiction efforts. The demining operation facilitated transit for approximately 1,500 vessels carrying roughly 750 million barrels of oil. The deployment of the USS Theodore Roosevelt in August 2026 reinforced American presence in the region to support the strait’s reopening.
