Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s former defense minister dismissed last month, has called for wartime elections, representing a direct political challenge to President Volodymyr Zelensky. In a video posted on YouTube, he declared that democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia and advocated for a legal, safe and realistic mechanism to renew the democratic process despite the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian law currently prohibits holding elections during wartime. The 35-year-old Fedorov, a popular figure credited with energizing the defense ministry and spearheading an anti-corruption drive, has been replaced by Yevhen Khmara, whose appointment was confirmed by Zelensky, effectively closing the door on a Fedorov comeback.
