UK watchdog investigates Microsoft over potential misleading practices tied to Copilot AI pricing

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority launched a formal investigation against Microsoft on July 29, 2026 over potentially misleading commercial practices. The tech group integrated Copilot AI into its Microsoft 365 offerings, raising the US Personal plan price from approximately $70 to $100 per year, a 43% increase. Existing subscribers allegedly received communications presenting only two options: accepting the new pricing tier or canceling their subscription, without clearly mentioning the existence of a « Classic » plan at the original price. Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in October 2025 targeting approximately 2.7 million affected customers, and Italy opened its own investigation in June 2026.
