On August 19, 2026, Uber launched its first autonomous rides in Europe, starting in Zagreb, Croatia, in partnership with Pony.ai and Verne. The service allows riders to book self-driving cars directly through the standard Uber app, with licensed safety operators currently present in all vehicles. Verne had previously launched what it described as Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service in April 2026. The three-way partnership targets the deployment of more than 2,000 robotaxis across five major European cities. Uber, which sold its autonomous driving unit in 2020, has chosen to partner with AV developers rather than build the technology in-house.
