The United States and Canada are actively negotiating a trade deal to prevent 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports from taking effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday. Canada’s Minister of International Trade Dominic LeBlanc said talks were progressing and both parties were very close to an agreement. Existing tariffs on steel, aluminum and lumber remain a central concern in the negotiations. President Trump suggested the deal could include reviving the Keystone XL pipeline and lowering tariffs on Canadian autos. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that Canada seeks to secure the best terms in its most important strategic sectors.
