The Trump administration is developing an AI-powered « detective border » to crack down on countries suspected of helping China evade US tariffs. According to an mid-range estimate from AI supply chain firm Exiger, 75 billion dollars in goods were illegally transshipped between February 2025 and February 2026, causing a loss of tariff revenue between 19 and 34 billion dollars. Over 40 countries are associated with elevated illegal transshipment risk, with Mexico, Canada, the European Union, India, Japan and South Korea identified as the biggest enablers. The tools deployed include analysis of shipment data, verification of production capacity and ownership structures, as well as X-ray imaging to detect mismatches between declared contents and actual container contents.
