Trump to slap ‘sweeping’ new tariffs on 60 trade partners as global duties expire

The Trump administration will impose new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on 60 trade partners just after midnight ET Friday for alleged forced-labor violations. These duties will effectively replace the temporary 10% global tariffs set to expire at the same time. The tariffs will cover 99.4% of U.S. trade, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The administration described the move as the most sweeping international labor rights action ever taken by the United States or any country. The new tariffs are being brought under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, after the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s global « liberation day » duties in February.
