Trump administration builds AI-powered ‘detective border’ to catch tariff cheats

The Trump administration is deploying an artificial intelligence system to detect goods that illicitly bypass US tariffs on Chinese products. This system, dubbed the « detective border, » analyzes shipment data, routing histories, production capacities and ownership ties to identify fraudulent rerouting. According to estimates from the firm Exiger, roughly $75 billion worth of goods may have been transshipped illegally between February 2025 and February 2026, resulting in $19 to $34 billion in losses for the US Treasury. More than 40 countries are targeted, including Mexico, Canada, the European Union, India, Japan, and South Korea.
