The SEC is reviewing automatic filing pathways after exotic crypto and event-linked ETF proposals flooded the market

The SEC launched a public consultation on June 30 to examine whether its current rules allow proper assessment of ETF products whose economic behavior differs sharply from traditional diversified funds. US ETF assets grew from over $4 trillion at the end of 2019 to over $12 trillion at the end of 2025, while the product count rose from nearly 1,900 to over 4,600. The review covers crypto assets, leveraged products, single-stock products, blockchain opportunities, private assets, and event contracts, with comments due by August 31. Crypto funds could face new rules around custody, liquidity, valuation, and product complexity, as the SEC considers regulatory amendments for innovative products such as election-linked ETFs or event futures contracts.
