The Iran war already has a winner: The world’s largest shipbroker notching record earnings from the ‘exceptional volatility’ in the Strait of Hormuz

Clarkson, the world’s largest shipbroker, reported record operating profit of £64.8 million ($87 million) in the first half, a 55% increase year-over-year. Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has dropped from over 100 ships per day to approximately 33 ships due to the Iran war and Houthi attacks in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. CEO Andi Case attributed the performance to global supply chain disruptions and exceptional volatility in shipping markets. Sea freight rates surged due to higher insurance premiums, benefiting brokers like Clarkson. The Ukraine conflict also suspended shipping to Black Sea ports, further disrupting global trade.
