KMT lawmakers have proposed distributing NT$10,000 (approximately $316) to each eligible resident of Taiwan, at an estimated cost of NT$236 billion. Taiwan’s economy posted 14.55% growth in the first quarter of 2026, its strongest quarterly pace in 48 years, with full-year 2026 forecasts revised upward to a range of 9.64% to 11.05%. The Executive Yuan, led by Premier Cho Jung-tai, opposes the plan, arguing that fiscal surpluses should go toward paying down national debt or funding infrastructure rather than a distribution that could stoke inflation. This proposal, led by KMT lawmaker Lo Ming-tsai and backed by 23 KMT legislators, is currently under committee review after passing its first reading on May 8, 2026.
