Sweden demands $56M from six crypto miners for invalid tax breaks

Sweden’s tax authority Skatteverket is demanding approximately 540 million SEK ($56.5 million) from six cryptocurrency mining companies based in Boden, in the north of the country, for improperly claimed tax benefits. The audit, running from 2024 to 2026, targets nine companies nationwide with adjustments exceeding 500 million SEK. Among them, Bikupan Datacenter, the Swedish subsidiary of HIVE Digital Technologies, has appealed to the Supreme Administrative Court after recording an $84.7 million non-cash provision in Q3 2026. The total estimated cost to Sweden’s public finances from crypto mining tax discrepancies is around $100 million.
