Ethereum developers have drafted a proposal to make the staking deposit system flexible enough to accept future quantum-resistant validation keys while also providing a mechanism to permanently stop new deposits using the current BLS format. Pull request 12235, opened on August 24, remains an unmerged draft and suggests assigning EIP number 8394. The system would propose three contract modes: disabled, BLS enabled, and BLS retired, with a one-way irreversible transition to retired mode. Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap targets approximately 2029, and this proposal is part of the necessary migration infrastructure to accommodate new validator key formats and permanently close BLS onboarding.
