Sports Betting and Prediction Markets: The New Retirement Plan for Young People

According to a Betterment survey of 1,000 U.S. investors, 26 % of Gen Z members now consider sports betting a durable component of their financial strategy, compared to 14 % for millennials and 1 % for baby boomers. Over half of young investors redirected money previously earmarked for investment into sports betting over the past year. This trend is driven by decreasing access to homeownership, with France’s housing effort rate rising from 30 % to nearly 38 % over ten years and required down payments nearly doubling. Brokerage firm Robinhood launched its own prediction markets in 2025, describing the unit as the fastest-growing in company history. In France, over 50 % of new investors under 35 hold crypto assets, signaling a shift toward high-volatility investments as an alternative to traditional financial systems.
