Southern Europe’s anti-immigrant attitude on display as Spain, Italy start checking each other’s passports

Spain and Italy are embroiled in a diplomatic dispute after Madrid imposed border controls on Italian travelers in response to Rome’s similar measures targeting Spanish citizens. The conflict erupted following the sudden arrival of 72,000 migrants from Morocco at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta late last month, which left over 80 dead. Italy, led by Giorgia Meloni, criticized Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s progressive migration policies, including an amnesty granted to immigrants without residency permits. Rome stated it will maintain border controls until at least August 15, refusing any ultimatum from Madrid.
