South Korea to require mock trading before retail investors can touch leveraged ETFs

Starting August 19, 2026, South Korea will require retail investors to complete at least five days of simulated trading on the KRX platform, complete three hours of educational training, and deposit a minimum of 30 million won (approximately $21,000) before trading single-stock leveraged ETFs and ETNs. The Kospi index surged 76% in 2025 before peaking above 9,300 points in June 2026, while daily trading volumes for newly launched leveraged products exceeded 10 trillion won with assets under management reaching 17.6 trillion won. Retail investors reportedly lost roughly half of their investments between late May and mid-July 2026 as the market corrected. Net redemptions totaled 1.4 trillion won in the first week of August 2026.
