Sony asked a California federal judge to dismiss a class action seeking reimbursement for PlayStation 5 buyers from the $508 million in tariff refunds the company expects to recover. The Supreme Court ruled in February 2025 that the emergency powers act does not authorize a president to impose tariffs. Sony called the claim « speculative and illogical, » arguing that buyers paid the advertised price voluntarily and that price increases were driven by inflation, currency fluctuations and other factors. PS5 prices rose again in March 2025, reaching $649.99 in the United States. Microsoft and Nintendo filed similar briefs, while Panic, maker of the Playdate handheld, chose to refund the 19% tariff it had charged customers.
