Solana will reduce its target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds at epoch 1020, after a one-epoch delay. The SIMD-0525 proposal simultaneously cuts per-slot compute limits to maintain a theoretical ceiling of approximately 250 million compute units per second. Compute limits will be progressively reduced: 87.5 million CUs at 350ms, 75 million at 300ms, 62.5 million at 250ms and 50 million at 200ms. This slot reduction also compresses epoch duration from 48 hours to 24 hours and shortens validator responsibility windows. Testnet is already running at 200ms while devnet sits at 300ms, and the roadmap targets 200ms for mainnet in the longer term.
